Sobering always to learn a classmate has passed at a relatively young age. Carl and I met in kindergarten where we both attended Mountainview Drive, a 2 room schoolhouse in Pine City where we shared one teacher and one classroom with multiple classes. Mountainview was a special place and was a throwback to our modern educational system with a deep connection to a past that few people our age or younger ever knew.

Recess was always the highlight of the day and a place where Carl often a solitary figure could be found on the far side of the school house with his hand cupped to his ear saying in a deep voice, "... this is Carl Ross reporting for WENY radio station 1270 on the AM dial from Elmira, New York." Carl had a vivid imagination and pretending as he often did, he was teased. I regrettably was one of those kids that teased him. Carl's frustration peaked and one day climbing the school bus stairs at the end of the day with me right behind him as I started to step up, Carl defended himself the best way he could.  He swung and planted his lunch box on my forehead. The next day at school with 4 stitches and a butterfly bandaid, a couple of kids held Carl by the arms and egged me on to slug him in the stomach. I did and I to this day regret it.

Our lives intersected then and although we went in different directions and never reconnected, years later our lives ran along parallel paths that I never knew until recently. Carl and I both separately pursued degrees and vocations as Counselors. Through helping others hopefully I've atoned for bulllying Carl. Rest peacefully Carl. My sincere apologies!

Going from 51 year old memory (my yearbook is not handy to check details), having met Carl only when at Southside, I believe we shared time in Concert Choir as Seniors, but I definitely remember his tuba in marching band. (Or was it a Sousaphone?) I played baritone horn - badly - not far from where he marched.

His interest in radio was a part of his life, and believe he also worked at WEHH.

I well remember enjoying time with him in high school.  We reconnected earlier this year through this website when I found out he was in Florida not overly far from my Florida home.  We had planned to reconnect in person this coming winter when I returned. Sadly, that will not happen now.

Rest well, Carl.
