Mitch passed away in his home May 18, 2014 due to complications with pnuemonia and a kidney infection.  He originates from Elmira, NY, but has lived in Tennessee for more than twenty years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Grace Vanhorn, and brother, Linden Mayes.  He is survived by his wife of thirty-three years, Teresa Lynn Mayes; his son, Mitcheal James Mayes Jr; his daughter, Brandee Lynn Bales; his son-in-law, Stanley Eugene Bales; his grandchildren, Teresa Joy Grace Bales and Robert Darrel Bales II; his sister, Myrtle Marie Haney; his brother, Gerald Timothy Mayes, along with several nieces and nephews.  He was a wonderful loving husband, father, and brother.  He will be dearly missed by his family.  Mitch was a die-hard Tennessee Titans fan, and loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as Charmed.  He was a very hard-working man.  He had many friends.  He will forever be in our hearts. I am proud to have had the honor of being his daughter.

Mitch will be missed by all his family and I will miss him. During our time at Southside Mitch and I were almost inseperable. We hung out together at school and at home. Seeley Creek was one of our favorite places and we skipped school often to enjoy tho old swimming hole which is not there now. He would come to the farm and help out with chores during the summer. We often enjoyed banana splits that were made at Maple Lawn Dairy where his sisters worked. We had plans to go into the Air FOrce together but Mitch did not pass the medical so we parted ways. We got back in touch after many years and the bond was still there. His passing is like losing a brother. R.I.P. Mitch.
